Cheerleaders vie for ‘bragging rights’

Found this great article in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the upcoming CheerSport Nationals in Atlanta, Ga:

The competitive cheerleading and dance meet is an Atlanta-born and -bred event that began 11 years ago with 32 teams in a high school gym and now fields 900 teams from 40 states and Canada. CheerSport says it is the largest cheerleading championship in the world, an accomplishment indeed worthy of a salutation of spirit fingers.

In addition to the 20,000 flip-flopping competitors, ranging from 4 years old to a few in their 40s, an additional 50,000 coaches, parents, siblings and grandparents will take over downtown this weekend. The competition will be run over two days at the Georgia World Congress Center.

$33 million

Estimated economic impact. Among events and conventions scheduled for Atlanta in 2008, it ranks fifth in both attendance and economic impact.

The Stamford High School Black Knights cheerleaders take 5th straight co-ed title

From an article in the Stanford Times online:

Stamford won its fifth straight FCIAC co-ed Cheerleading championship on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Zeoli Fieldhouse, edging out Brien McMahon by nine points to keep the title for another year.

The season started with some in-squad nerve-wracking as a some cheerleaders left the team, opting instead to compete with All-Star squads. That left a freshmen-heavy team (13 of the 25 girls on the roster are 9th graders) and it had everybody wondering if a fifth straight title could be had.

Dixon cheerleaders for national contest

From an article in the

Two young cheerleader squads from Dixon took honors in the 2008 USA Spirit Regional Cheerleading competition Nov. 18 at Sonoma State University.The Dixon Rams Junior Pee Wee team won the novice championship and the Pee Wee Rams took second place.

Both teams have earned the right to compete at the USA Junior Nationals Cheerleading competition which will be held in the Hyperion Theater at Disney’s California Adventure Park on Saturday, March 1.

Hilton goes for another cheerleading title

From an article in the Rochester Democrat and Chronical,

 The Hilton winter cheerleading team has traveled to competitions out of state and returned home with first-place trophies.

Chelsea Williams, a senior and one of Hilton’s five captains, enjoys the praise from competitors, their coaches and parents that sometimes come with winning those events.
