In Japanese Cheerleading, One Squad Stands Apart
The Wall Street Journal has a great article about cheerleading in Japan. It is great to see cheerleading getting this kind of press from this level of news paper.
A national cheerleading competition in Japan a few months ago pitted teams of young miniskirted women against one another.
The winners, though, looked a little different.
For one thing, the 24-member Shockers squad dresses in baggy shorts and T-shirts. For another, it consists entirely of men. Shockers bested 14 all-female teams to win the main cheerleading category, impressing the judges with a dynamic 2½-minute routine that included back flips and airborne splits. It was the team’s second championship at this event in three years.
