IT’S taken blood, sweat and tears.” When you hear Gary Mort talk about the cheerleading squad he founded a year ago, you can believe he’s telling the absolute truth.

Gary has successfully taken his brainchild from a basic gymnasium in Boldon to winning their first major league cup.

After starting out with a handful of enthusiasts, an Echo appeal bought in six new members last September and Skyline took off.

In May the squad beat off stiff competition to win at the Future Cheer Superhero Spirit Challenge in Edinburgh.

University of Central Oklahoma has added to their list of championship titles this season by winning the NCA and NDA Collegiate National Championship for Coed Intermediate. 

UCO beat 13 other teams on April 10, including some bigger schools from around the nation. UCO beat Georgia State, Michigan, West Point, Lindenwood, and North Texas. Also entered into the same competition were two other Oklahoma colleges. Eastern Oklahoma State finished 13th, and Oral Roberts University finished 9th.

In the same year that Fairmont State University fielded a cheerleading team as a sport rather than as a club, the group had a chance to “Bring It On” when the group took second place in a national competition last week in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Only the team from Hawaii Pacific University scored higher among the 10 teams that competed in the All-Girl Division II section of the National Cheerleading Association’s Collegiate Cheer Championships. The Fairmont State team competed April 9 and 10.

The infinity All Stars took home first place and the title of Regional Champions at the West Cost Regional Championships held at Six Flags Magic Mountain March 15th, which featured more than 75 teams from across Southern California. The team won the title against all odds, beating out programs more than twice their size that have been around three times as long. Entering their second season this June, infinity All Stars is ready for this up coming competition season.

A Coachella Valley competitive cheer team lost its first place title in a recent competition because a coach competed with the teenagers.

The 18-person team was down two girls to injuries the morning of the March 8 competition and then another was in a car crash on the way to the Live! Los Angeles competition — something the team found out 30 minutes before performing.

Divine AllStars Cheer and Dance of Simi Valley was the only other team in the division and was given first place.

Dedication and love of the sport is what it takes to commit six to 10 hours a week to practice for a team over two hours away, but for competitive cheerleaders Kristen Morris and Chelsea Lahey it’s also about the team.

The next competition for the girls is Worlds, the best of the best. There are teams from across the globe competing for that one title. Lahey and Morris have been practicing with the Twisters nonstop for Worlds and feel like they are ready to take over Orlando.

“We practice like no other team, we condition each practice with a 2-mile run and focus on our goal,” Lahey said. “It’s a great place to meet people from around the world, but we know everyone wants a Worlds ring.”

Cheer808 Inc. is Hawaii’s first inter-island all star cheerleading program. This non-profit organization is extremely excited to showcase their talent at this weekend’s competition. Under program director and head coach Travis Thomason, Cheer808 will showcase Hawaii’s FIRST ever special needs cheer team, along with five other competitive teams, including one from Maui!

 

Cheer808’s big debut kicks off this Friday, April 3rd and Saturday, the 4th at 3:30 p.m. at the Waikiki Shell. Their teams include the Special Needs Team, Youth Team Imi’ ike, Junior Team Ekahi, Senior Team Laulima, Open Team Pohaku and Cheer808 Lahaina Elite. Each team is looking to claim a win this weekend at the Shell and the community is encourage to come out and show some ‘Aloha Sprit’ to support our local youth.

The Aerial’s Extreme youth cheerleading team finished second in the nation at the UCA National All Star Championships held at the Wide World of Sports venue in Walt Disney World, Florida.

Dynasty Elite’s youth squad recently turned in a championship performance at the World Spirit Federation Nationals in Tampa, winning first place in its division as well as the Grand Champion title.

Five squads overall went to Nationals, including teams in the Junior, Senior, Tiny, and Hip-Hop divisions. The Senior and Hip-Hop teams each placed third.

The Waldorf College Cheer Squad has been selected to compete in the prestigious Cheer Ltd. national cheerleading competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C., March 18-22. The squad will compete against approximately 40 other teams who qualified by submitting videos of their routines. It will be the first time the Waldorf cheerleaders have competed in this event.

Cheerleading is recognized as a sport at Waldorf College, a member of the Midwest Collegiate Conference and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The team prides themselves in performing difficult stunts that are typically only done by co-ed squads.
