VARSITY CELEBRATES 15 YEARS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WALT DISNEY WORLD® RESORT

[USPRwire, Fri Jun 05 2009] The 2009 season marks the 15th year that the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) and the Universal Dance Association (UDA) have held their National Championships at the Walt Disney World® Resort.

Between them, the Universal Cheerleaders Association and the Universal Dance Association host four premier, large events, bringing a total of 12,000 cheerleading and dance teams to the event venues, including Disney’s Wide World of Sports® Complex and the Indiana Jones Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studio.

All four National Championships are televised on ESPN and ESPN2, as part of a partnership with Varsity, the parent company of Universal Cheerleading Association and Universal Dance Association. The events include:

Gym Owner of the Year Award….

Each April during the Cheerleading and Dance Worlds, the USASF recognizes the achievements and contributions of leaders within the industry. This Friday, honorees will be unveiled at the VIP Awards Ceremony in Orlando, Florida.Inside Cheerleading magazine has partnered with the USASF to present the Gym Owner of the Year Award.

Local cheer teams take stage in East Coast competition

Stunt show cancelled for two days at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Due to the upcoming UCA National All Star Cheerleading Championship Competition, everyone’s favorite stunt show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will not be performing on March 14 and 15. The one of the UCA’s three most prestigious cheerleading and dance competitions in the nation will be held on the set where the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular can be seen. 

 

More than 22,000 cheerleaders will dance and cheer their way to the finals in front of more than 25,000 spectators who travel to Walt Disney World to show their support. The championships will be aired onESPN and espn2, check local listings for air times.

Now cheerleaders have their own Internet broadcast radio station. Launched on January 1, 2009, Cheer1FM is already being listened to in over 40 countries worldwide. Victory! Cheerleading wins national title

It was confidence, repetition and a close bond that cheerleaders from the Victory! Cheerleading all-star senior team credit for their recent win at the 2008-09 Cheersport National Championship in Atlanta.

The team was judged on tumbling, stunts, dance, presentation and other factors during its routine that was two minutes and 32 seconds long.

Think cheerleading’s easy? Not in a man’s world

Here is a great article from Sandra Gonzalez with The Monitor that talks about a young mans fight against the stereo types of being a male cheerleader.

It’s a cruel double standard Edson Juarez has dealt with every day since he joined cheerleading.

Immediately, the guys he once hung out with started giving him the cold shoulder. On his way to class through the halls of Lincoln Middle School, he became a target. His classmates’ weapons were only words, but they cut deep and left wounds that haven’t completely healed, even five years later.

Even his father did not support him when he started.  It was so bad that he eventually quit and went into other sports. 

During his freshman year, he even took a place on the field instead of on the sidelines as a junior varsity football player.

But he was bored. After JV games he’d join the band, but look out to the cheerleaders with admiration and a hint of jealousy.
