4 Policemen Hospitalize As Youth Clash With Operatives In Asaba

Four policemen attached to the Delta State Police Command have been hospitalised. The policemen were hospitalised following injuries sustained from armed youths in Asaba.

One of the victims is reportedly dead from the sustained injuries but a police source denied the death.

Sources told Daily Trust that hoodlums armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons disarmed the policemen. The attack on the policemen took place at a popular junction along the Asaba/Onitsha road in Asaba.

Four service guns including two AK47 assault rifles were reportedly carted away by the hoodlums.

Residents of the area who confirmed the incident said it occurred on Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at about 9:20 pm.

Sources said that the incident led to panic around the Mozaic area because the police was later raided by police.

This led to Police arresting some youths in the area who were said to be innocent.

One of the residents who witnessed the attack said, “The incident took place at Moziac Junction along the Asaba-Onitsha road.

“We don’t know how it happened. But the hoodlums numbering eleven macheted some policemen with four sustaining life-threatening injuries.

The injured policemen were rushed to hospitals through the assistance of residents of the area. One of them was in coma at the time they were rushed to hospitals.

We learnt that the officer died later. But you have to clarify from the police authorities.”

State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adeyinka Adeleke, when contacted was said to be on leave. He directed us to the State Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onowakpoyeya.

Onome Onowakpoyeya at the time of filing this report said she was still gathering information on the matter.
