President Bola Tinubu

By CHUKWUMA OFILLI

The Nigerian Federal Government has taken decisive action against bullying in schools, suspending 13 students from Federal Government College (FGC) in Enugu for six weeks. This follows the release of a viral video showing students engaging in a violent assault on an SS1 day student, raising significant concerns about safety within Nigeria’s educational institutions.

Minister of Education Responds to Public Outcry

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, ordered the suspension, citing the government’s commitment to student safety and a zero-tolerance policy toward bullying. The suspension was announced after the Ministry of Education’s disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and identified all students involved. A statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Folashade Boriowo, confirmed the suspension, pending further investigation results.

Federal Ministry of Education to Enforce Strict Anti-Bullying Measures

The ministry has formed a School-Based Management Committee to collaborate with law enforcement to thoroughly investigate the case. Dr. Alausa stressed that any potential affiliations with external groups will also be examined as part of a comprehensive review.

Enhanced Security and Student Counseling Introduced

To prevent similar incidents, the Federal Ministry of Education has introduced tighter security measures at FGC Enugu, involving additional law enforcement presence and a review of the school’s safety protocols. Counseling and rehabilitation programs will also be available to students to support their mental well-being and encourage positive behavior.

Dr. Alausa’s actions highlight the government’s resolve to maintain discipline and a safe learning environment for all students in Nigeria. This intervention aims to uphold standards that foster respect and security within the education system.
