Government Alleges Opposition’s Role in Violence

The Abia State Government has accused opposition politicians of collaborating with external forces to incite violence and undermine security in the state. These allegations follow a series of attacks on army personnel, including the recent killing of two soldiers at a checkpoint in Ekenobizi, Umuopara, near the border with Imo State.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the government pledged a decisive counter-offensive against all forms of violence, emphasizing its commitment to restoring order.

Unpatriotic Politics Linked to Rising Violence

Ekeoma stated that the government has identified a connection between opposition politicians and the recent surge in criminal activities. “Based on tip-offs from patriotic citizens and reliable intelligence, it is firmly established that some unpatriotic politicians, in collaboration with external parties, are behind this wave of violence,” he declared.

The opposition, he alleged, adopted these tactics after their propaganda campaigns failed to sway public opinion against the administration of Governor Alex Otti. He warned that perpetrators would face severe consequences for their actions.

Eight Soldiers Lost Since May 2024

The attacks on security personnel began in May 2024, claiming the lives of eight soldiers to date. The first incident occurred on May 19, followed by another on May 30, where five soldiers were killed. Police officers have also been targeted in these violent acts, further escalating concerns about public safety.

Counter-Offensive and Public Warning

In response to the violence, the Abia government has intensified its security operations, launching a “new counter-offensive” to dismantle structures of terror within the state. Ekeoma urged citizens not to harbor unknown individuals to avoid being implicated in criminal activities.

“The government will not sit idly by and allow any person or group to disrupt the peace or endanger innocent lives. Criminal elements will be smoked out and dealt with decisively,” Ekeoma warned.

Commitment to Peace and Development

Despite the challenges, the government reiterated its dedication to maintaining peace and fostering development in Abia State. Ekeoma assured residents that the administration’s peaceful disposition should not be mistaken for weakness.

“The government is prepared to safeguard lives and property, ensuring that peace-loving citizens can conduct their affairs without fear,” he stated.

Call for Vigilance and Cooperation

The government encouraged Abia residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies. Citizens were reassured of the government’s determination to protect their lives and property while criminal elements would face the full weight of the law.
