WAEC Controversies: CJN Tanko Muhammad being sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, has raised another controversy in the country’s legal system as regards to the practice and teaching of Sharia in Nigerian Schools.
This is coming as Muhammad was reported to have said that Sharia Law should be taught in Arabic in our universities.
But this suggestion has angered some Nigerians who wondered why the CJN should circumvent Nigeria’s constitution by imposing unofficial language of teaching on Nigerian students.
One of the critics of the alleged recommendation is a renowned scholar and social critic, Prof. Farooq Kperogi, who argued that the CJN is being hypocritical as he is alleged to has neither made the cut in Arabic nor English.
His purpoted June 1973 WAEC result in circulation showed that he recorded only five subjects with credits in Islamic Religious Knowledge, History and Hausa, while pass in Arabic and Chemistry. English Language was not recorded as part of his result.
Kperogi also noted that Muhammad who was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari to replace Justice Walter Onnoghen as Nigeria’s apex judicial officer in a very controversial circumstances is not doing enough to redeem himself.
Buhari also had controversial WAEC certification which was challenged up to the Supreme Court.
Recall that barely a week after his controversial appointment and at the heat of Buhari’s re-election battle, the CJN led other Justices of the Supreme and Appeal Court to have a dinner with the then President who is one of the contestant in the 2019 election.

Speaking on the latest development, Kperogi alleged: “The man himself didn’t even get a credit in Arabic in his WASC but went ahead to study Sharia Law. He also had no credit in English, as this result shows”.
According to him: “Isn’t the content of the course more important than the language in which it is taught? How many people in Nigeria, including Muslim northern Nigeria, enrol, much less get credit, Arabic anyway? ”
“In any case, English is Nigeria’s official language. Well, what do you expect from a lawyer who doesn’t know what a “technicality” means?”
