The tragic accident highlights the dangers of speeding and fatigue, with authorities urging greater road safety awareness.

A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when a white Mazda bus collided with a moving truck near Car Park C in the Lotto area, resulting in the death of the bus driver. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transporting bags of potatoes to Lagos when the fatal crash took place.

Possible Fatigue and Speeding Behind Tragedy

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver may have dozed off behind the wheel before losing control and crashing into the rear of the truck. Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Enforcement and Compliance Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident and attributed it to excessive speed and possible fatigue.

“According to eyewitnesses, the driver was speeding and likely fell asleep at the wheel. The fully loaded bus crashed into a Dangote truck from behind, and the driver was tragically killed on the spot,” Akinbiyi said in a statement.

Caution Urged for Motorists

In his statement, Akinbiyi extended condolences to the bereaved family and used the occasion to caution other motorists about the dangers of speeding and driving while fatigued, especially at night.

He added, “We strongly advise against night travel and excessive speed, which are major contributors to avoidable road fatalities. This incident underscores the critical importance of road safety awareness and adherence to traffic regulations.”

Road Safety on High-Traffic Routes

The crash has once again brought attention to the frequent accidents on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of the country’s major traffic routes. Authorities continue to call for stricter enforcement of road safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
