State Government Prioritizes Education, Security, and Infrastructure

Benin City, Edo State – In a bid to make an immediate impact, Governor Monday Okpebholo has launched the reconstruction and renovation of 100 schools across Edo State to commemorate his first 100 days in office.

The Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs. Onomen Brigg, revealed this while accompanying Mrs. Angela Okpamen, a board representative for Edo South, on an inspection of school facilities in the state.

Governor Okpebholo to Prioritize Security and Fencing of Schools

Mrs. Brigg emphasized the need for community involvement in preventing vandalism and theft of school property. She highlighted that the governor’s initiative also includes fencing all schools to enhance security.

“Security is a major issue we must address. We are sensitizing communities to protect these facilities because if they are destroyed, it’s the children who suffer. Fences and security posts will be installed to ensure controlled access,” she said.

Ongoing Renovations and Target Completion Timeline

During their visit to schools such as Ebo Primary School, Ore-Oghene Primary School, Evbareke Junior Secondary School, Use Junior Secondary School, and Okhekhugbo Primary School, officials observed a dire shortage of furniture, with some students sitting on the floor due to overcrowding.

Mrs. Brigg assured that the renovation includes the provision of new chairs and tables, ensuring that improved infrastructure is complemented with adequate furnishings.

“You can’t put new furniture in a dilapidated building. The structures must be in good condition first, then we bring in new furniture,” she stated.

She also confirmed that the renovation and construction efforts would be completed within one to three weeks, depending on the school.

Overcrowding and Infrastructure Deficit in Edo Schools

Reports from some of the schools revealed severe overcrowding, with up to 200 students crammed into a single classroom due to a lack of facilities.

The Edo State Government’s initiative aims to enhance the learning environment for students, ensuring they receive quality education in a safe and well-equipped setting.
