Endehu Hill: Dreaded Horror of Death

The Endehu Hill corridor of the Lafia-Akwanga Highway in Nasarawa State, now notorious for unending fatal road accidents, is in dire need of rehabilitation, ADELANI ADEPEGBA and UMAR MUHAMMED report

For drivers and commuters, who regularly ply the Lafia-Akwanga Highway, the Endehu Hill, popularly known as ‘Many have gone,’ is a dreaded corridor of death.

When approaching that part of the road, motorists often hold their breath and apply their brakes with extreme caution as they ascend and descend the dangerous hill where the unwary, reckless and even prayerful travelers have passed on to the great beyond.

Endehu hill lies at an altitude of about 400 metres above sea level and it is surrounded by many smaller hills. But the calm and peaceful atmosphere around the hill belies the huge tally of lives lost to road accidents, armed robbery attacks and other forms of violence in the area.

News reports claim that ‘Many have gone’ has been the scene of many abductions by unknown gunmen who hide in the surrounding bushes. Investigation also reveals that more Nigerians than imagined have died in road accidents on this spot. To buttress this, on July 15, 2019, no fewer than 15 persons were feared dead in a ghastly accident on the road, which occurred when a Toyota Carina car and a Toyota Hilux truck had a head-on collision. All the 10 occupants of both vehicles, including the drivers, died in the mishap.
