FCT Administration Conducts Operation to Remove Beggars and Scavengers

Joint Security Forces Round Up 34 Individuals in Abuja

In a recent operation following a ministerial directive for the removal of beggars and scavengers from the **Federal Capital Territory (FCT)**, a joint detachment of security personnel arrested **34 individuals** on Monday. This group consisted of **15 beggars** and **19 scavengers**.

Rehabilitation and Repatriation Plans

The FCT Administration announced that those arrested will be taken to a rehabilitation center for vocational training. Individuals unwilling to learn any skills will be repatriated to their respective states. The operation involved personnel from various security agencies, including the **Police**, **Military**, **Department of State Services (DSS)**, and the **Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)**.

**Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Olatunji Disu**, described the operation as a “national assignment,” emphasizing the need for professionalism among officers while maintaining a firm stance on enforcing the ministerial orders. He stated, “This operation will last for the first two weeks. We will come back and assess our achievements, then we will go back if there is a need for us to continue it.”

Operational Details

The Director of Security in the FCT Administration, **Adamu Gwary**, indicated that the operations would be conducted both day and night to ensure effectiveness. The operation was divided into four groups covering:

– **Metro (City Centre)**
– **Airport Road**
– **Kubwa Axis** (including Gwarinpa to Dei Dei)
– **Asokoro Axis** (covering AYA, Nyanya, Karu, and Jikwoyi)

While no beggars were apprehended in the city center as they reportedly went into hiding, the operation successfully detained 15 beggars and 19 scavengers in other areas.

Broader Goals of the Operation

**Kaka Bello**, head of enforcement at the **Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEBP)**, stated that the operation aims to address not only the presence of beggars but also any nuisance affecting the city. He noted that roadside traders and technicians operating in illegal spaces would also be evacuated during the operation.

Future Steps for the Arrested Individuals

**Dr. Sani Rabe**, Director of Social Welfare for the **Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA)**, explained that the arrested individuals would be taken to the government rehabilitation center located in **Kuchikon, Bwari Area Council**. There, they will be profiled, and those deemed trainable will have the opportunity to learn skills for personal empowerment. Those unwilling to participate in skill acquisition programs will be repatriated.
