Agencies Such as National Emergency Management Agency and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons Have been Ordered by to immediately provide support and assistance to the over 2,000 internally displaced persons in Kaduna State.
It said the directive became imperative after it reviewed preliminary assessment reports on the displacement of persons from their villages.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, gave the marching order to the two agencies, according to a statement issued by her ministry in Abuja.
Last week, 15 villages in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State were attacked by bandits leading to the displacement of over 2,000 people.
Farouq was quoted in the statement as saying, “The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development exists to be responsive to the plight of innocent Nigerians who are victims of humanitarian emergencies, disasters, and social challenges.
“Under my watch, the ministry and agencies under me will do their best to ensure help gets to people on time whenever any unfortunate incident occurs.”
She directed the two agencies to update her accordingly with a view to providing lasting solutions to the predicament of the people concerned.
Farouq said, “This is a very sad and unfortunate situation. I can imagine the distress and discomfort those affected are experiencing as a result of being sent out of their homes unceremoniously.”
She appealed to the affected residents of Kaduna State to remain calm and assured them that the Federal Government was looking into the matter.
Farouq said the government would not just provide immediate relief but would assist the IDPs to return to their homes as soon as possible.
