Fresh Herdsmen Attacks in Benue State Leave 2 Farmers Dead, Heighten Tension in Gwer West

The persistent issue of herdsmen attacks in Benue State has claimed more lives, as two farmers were reportedly killed in separate incidents in Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA). The killings, which occurred on Wednesday, have once again sparked fear and outrage in the agrarian communities of the state. This latest development comes just weeks after similar attacks in the area led to a violent protest by enraged youths in Naka, the council headquarters. That protest spiraled into chaos, resulting in the destruction of several properties, including the Gwer West local government secretariat, the palace of the traditional ruler, and the homes of prominent community leaders.

Farmers Killed Along Major Routes Near Naka

Eyewitnesses from the affected communities revealed that the two victims were ambushed and killed by suspected armed herdsmen along two of the major access roads leading to Naka. The attacks reportedly took place along the Taraku-Naka road and the Naka-Adoka road, both of which are now considered unsafe by locals. A source from Naka, who preferred anonymity due to security concerns, described the horror surrounding the murders. “One of the victims was attacked and killed near Atukpu village, just one kilometre away from Naka town, along the Taraku-Naka road. On the same day, another victim was killed along the Naka-Adoka road,” the source said. He further stated that the security situation has deteriorated to the point where even corpses are now being recovered with wheelbarrows, due to the absence of security and fear of further attacks. According to him, the Makurdi-Naka road, another major route into the community, has also been taken over by armed herders.

Council Chairman Confirms Insecurity, Raises Alarm

Reacting to the latest herdsmen attacks in Benue State, the Chairman of Gwer West LGA, Mr. Victor Ormin, confirmed the killings and raised serious concerns over the growing threat to residents’ safety. “A young man was killed while going to Taraku to buy roofing materials for his house. Another was murdered along the Adoka-Naka axis. These attacks are becoming a daily occurrence, and they’re now happening just within five kilometres of the local government headquarters,” he lamented. Ormin noted that Naka and its surrounding communities are no longer safe, with all three major roads leading to the LGA now deemed dangerous due to the presence of armed herdsmen. The council boss commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for ongoing efforts to improve security in the state but warned that the current level of security deployment may be insufficient and overstretched to cover the magnitude of threats faced by communities in Gwer West.

Security Forces Yet to Respond to Fresh Attacks

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Catherine Anene, for official confirmation and comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. This has further fueled concerns among residents who feel neglected and abandoned in the face of ongoing killings. Many locals have also expressed fears that without urgent intervention, more lives may be lost and more communities displaced, as herdsmen attacks in Benue State continue to escalate unchecked.

Benue Communities Living in Fear Amid Growing Violence

The Gwer West LGA has long been one of the worst-hit areas by herdsmen attacks in Benue State’s farmer-herder conflict, which has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands over the past decade. With farming being the primary occupation in the region, residents say they can no longer access their farmlands for fear of being attacked. The impact of these continuous herdsmen attacks in Benue extends beyond security; it has also begun to threaten food production, livelihoods, and overall stability in the region. Locals warn that unless drastic measures are taken, the state could face a humanitarian crisis over herdsmen attacks in Benue as displaced farmers lose access to food and income.

Herdsmen attacks in Benue Calls for Urgent Government Action

Community leaders and civil society organizations are now calling on both the state and federal governments to reassess and strengthen security architecture in the region. They are urging increased deployment of security personnel, establishment of vigilante groups, and stricter enforcement of anti-open grazing laws. Many residents believe that Benue State’s anti-open grazing law, enacted to curb these attacks, is not being fully enforced, allowing herdsmen to roam freely and launch unprovoked attacks. As the nation continues to grapple with widespread insecurity, the herdsmen attacks in Benue State remain one of the most tragic and unresolved crises, with calls growing louder for the government to prioritize the safety of its rural populations.
