On Monday, June 19, 2023, President Bola Tinubu announced the appointment of new officers to succeed them and the retirement of all Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, Advisors, and the Comptroller-General of Customs from Service.
The replacement is effective immediately, according to a statement from Willie Bassey, Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
As Tinubu’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) from 1999 to 2007 while he was the governor of Lagos, DIG Kayode Egbetokun, a former commissioner of police in Lagos, was named the new acting inspector general of police.
Egbetokun, a mathematics graduate of the University of Lagos, taught the subject for a brief period at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos before joining the Nigeria Police Force.
The declaration put an end to discussions around Nuhu Ribadu’s appointment, which had been made public last week as the President’s Special Advisor on Security.
The selection of Ribadu has stirred online discussions, with many Nigerians questioning whether he would also hold the job of national security adviser, which has typically been held by retired army generals. The former police officer Ribadu was acknowledged as the national security adviser in the statement on Monday.
