Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, the Speaker of the House of Representatives has said that Nigerian universities lack the capabilities the country needed to steer it out of turbulence to the path of greatness.
Gbajabiamila said it was doubtful that our institutions of higher learning could drive Nigeria’s development.
He pointed out that many countries have driven their economy to greater height through quality research from their universities.
Mr Gbajabiamila said this while delivering a keynote address at the UNIOSUN First Tunde Ponle Annual Lecture.
Femi Gbajabiamila spoke on the theme: Building a Truly 21st Century University; A Task Beyond Government.

Gbajabiamila said it’s government duty to reverse the decline in education quality.
The Honourable Speaker, however, added that building the 21st-century university was beyond the capacity of government alone.
Gbajabiamila said that establishing and maintaining more privately-owned university is key.
Mr Gbajabiamila said that quality education must be affordable to the ordinary Nigerians.
