Governor Obiano Flee Nigeria Before EFCC Places Him On Watchlist

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has been placed on the watchlist of the Economics and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The anti-graft agency has asked Nigerian Immigration Service to inform it whenever Obiano is travelling abroad.

Daily Trust reports that Obiano, who is billed to hand over power to Professor Charles Soludo in March, is currently out of the country.

According to sources, the outgoing Anambra governor flew to the US after Soloudo’s victory in the election held two weeks ago.

Despite the fear and concerns on the possibility of the election being disrupted due to widespread violence in the buildup to the exercise, it was a massive win for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which won in 19 of the 21 LGAs in the state.

Obiano was twice elected under APGA and he supported Soludo in the election.

In the letter to Immigration, the commission said it should be informed whenever the governor is travelling out of the country through any of the international airports, as well as other points of entry and exit.

It is not clear why the anti-graft agency placed the governor on a watchlist.

Obiano currently enjoys immunity from arrest and prosecution.

Spokesman of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, is yet to comment on the letter the commission wrote to Immigration over Obiano.

‘Nobody placed Obiano on watchlist’

But reacting to the story, the state commissioner for information and public enlightenment, Mr C.Don Adinuba, said nobody placed the governor on a travel watchlist.

Adinuba, who spoke with Daily Trust via the phone, said it is ridiculous for such to happen.

” It is crazy for anybody to say the governor is placed on travel watchlist when he is already out of the country. Any person who originated the story was out to serve mischievous intention,” he said
