By DAYO ADESULU

In a significant move affecting legal education in Nigeria, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the suspension of admissions into the Law Faculty at Fountain University, Osogbo, for the 2025/26 academic session. This decision follows a recent directive from the Council of Legal Education (CLE), marking Fountain University as the ninth institution to face this suspension.

Previously, JAMB had communicated that it would halt admissions for the Law program at eight other universities due to the suspension of their Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programs by the CLE. The list of affected institutions includes:

1. Kwara State University, Malete, Ilorin, Kwara State

2. Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State

3. Redeemers University, Ede, Osun State

4. Western Delta University, Oghara, Delta State

5. Taraba State University, Jalingo, Taraba State

6. Arthur Jarvis University, Akpabuyo, Cross River State

7. Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State

8. Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State

The suspension at the Nigerian Police Academy will extend across two academic sessions, specifically the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 periods, based on the CLE’s decision.

This development is crucial for prospective law students and stakeholders in the education sector as it underscores the importance of adhering to the standards set by the CLE for legal education in Nigeria. The CLE’s actions aim to ensure that law programs maintain a high level of integrity and quality, ultimately benefitting the legal profession in the country.

Dr. Fabian Benjamin, Public Communications Advisor for JAMB, emphasizes the board’s commitment to upholding educational standards and transparency in the admission processes across Nigerian universities.

As the landscape of legal education continues to evolve, prospective students and parents are encouraged to stay informed about these developments and consider alternative institutions that meet the necessary accreditation requirements for law programs.
