Authorities of the ‘Maltina Teacher Of The Year MTOTY’ have declared open entry applications for the best teacher in Nigeria 2023, starting from May 25, 2023. The best teacher in Nigeria would go home with N6.5 million.

Declaring the entry application open on Thursday, Sade Morgan, the Corporate Affairs Director at Nigerian Breweries Plc said the MTOTY initiative is part of Nigerian Breweries’ commitment to its corporate philosophy of active part in supporting education, amongst other CSR focus points.

Speaking on the competition’s objectives, she explained that the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award aims to recognize and celebrate exceptional teachers in Nigeria, adding that the initiative is open to teachers in all secondary schools across the country.

”There will be champions from each state of the federation and the FCT from which the overall winner will emerge – State Champions that emerge from the 36 States and the FCT are recognised and rewarded, and the National Winners emerges from these State Champions after further assessment,” She said.

According to her, NB Plc set up the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund in 1994 with a startup capital of 100 million Naira to enable sustained quality education through structured intervention in the sector.

She said: ”Through the Fund, we have constructed and furnished over 400 classrooms, sanitary facilities and libraries in 74 communities across the country. We have also granted scholarships to deserving students in tertiary institutions.

”In 2015, the fund introduced the Maltina Teacher of the Year, a national competition to identify, honour and reward outstanding teachers in Nigeria.

”Maltina Teacher of the Year which has recognised a total of 181 teachers since inception, is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders in education including the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT), All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS) and Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Air Peace and Standard IBTC.”

Mr. Ayiwulu Alaku 2022 Winner Ayiwulu Alaku is a native of Nasarawa State, a Teacher at Federal Government College Jos since 2014, he teaches Physics and Basic Sciences. He graduated from the University of Jos Nigeria with his first and second degree in Physics Education, and he is also a Fulbright TEA Alumni. He remains ever passionate towards inclusive education, academic research, teacher training, coaching and nurturing students towards attaining their highest potential.

Abanika Taiye is a Design and Technology/Basic Technology/Technical Drawing teacher at James Hope College, Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria. He emerged as the winner of the prestigious Maltina Teacher of The Year award in 2021. He remains ever passionate and continues to give unwavering support to students and now shares best practices in education with educators.
Ms. Oluwabunmi Anani 2020 Winner Oluwabunmi Ahoefa Anani hails from Lagos State, Nigeria and she is resident in Yola, Adamawa State where she teaches English Language and Literature at Concordia College Yola. Oluwabunmi who enjoys organizing programmes for children and teenagers, has executed a number of projects through her initiative: the Initiative for Educational Transformation (IET).

Mr. Ezem Collins 2019 Winner Ezem Collins, a teacher at the Royal Family Academy, Abuja has emerged the 2019 Maltina Teacher of the Year. Collins, a Civic Education and Christian Religious Studies teacher was declared winner of the prestigious honour at the grand finale held on Friday, October 18, at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Ezem Collins, a teacher at the Royal Family Academy, Abuja has emerged as the 2019 Maltina Teacher of the Year. Collins, a Civic Education and Christian Religious Studies teacher was declared winner of the prestigious honour at the grand finale held on Friday, October 18, at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Mr. Olasunkanmi Opeifa 2018 Winner Olasunkanmi who teaches in Government Day Secondary School Karu, a school in a semi-rural area of Abuja serving children of low-income earners in the civil service, market traders and artisans. He has also published a book on learning English in order to reach more students beyond his community, and introduced free weekend tutorials in order to cover the syllabus with them.

Mr. Imoh Enoh Essien 2016 Winner Imoh Essien teaches at the Special Education Center for Exceptional Children, Uyo. He attained his first and second degrees in Special Education. Essien who is a top-class professional caregiver, tutor and guide to children with special needs believes that children can best be served through the cooperative effort of teachers, principals, support personnel and their parents.
