Kano State Crackdown: Significant Drug Seizures and Arrests
KANO, NIGERIA — In a determined effort to curb drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano Command seized a staggering 709.979 kilograms of illegal drugs in October. The operation also led to the arrest of 129 male suspects, according to a statement by NDLEA Kano Command’s spokesman, ASN Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, released on Wednesday.
Breakdown of Seized Substances and Arrests
State Commander Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad detailed the drug haul, noting the confiscation of 309.991kg of cannabis sativa. In addition, officers seized 394.835kg of various psychotropic substances, which included 741,600 Tramadol tablets, 2.789kg of pregabalin, and 0.027kg of methamphetamine.
“These arrests and seizures highlight our commitment to eradicating drug abuse and trafficking. In total, 22 convictions have been secured this month, reinforcing the legal consequences for drug-related offenses,” said Idris-Ahmad.
Support and Rehabilitation for Offenders
The command has profiled all the suspects, with some charged and sent to court, while others have been referred to the NDLEA’s counseling unit for rehabilitation and support. Idris-Ahmad highlighted the agency’s dual approach, combining enforcement with support for rehabilitation, in order to discourage drug misuse.

Idris-Ahmad credited Brigadier-General Mohammed Marwa (Rtd), NDLEA Chairman and CEO, for his consistent support and guidance. He also praised the Kano State Government and local partners for their essential role in these recent successes. “Our collaboration with stakeholders will continue to strengthen our capacity in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking,” he noted.

The NDLEA calls on Kano residents and the wider Nigerian public to actively participate in the fight against drugs by reporting suspicious activities through the agency’s hotline at 0800 1020 3040. “Together, we can work towards a healthier, safer society,” Idris-Ahmad urged.
