Nigerian Military Neutralizes 34 Terrorists in Fierce Borno State Clash

By DAYO ADESULU

A major confrontation between Nigerian security forces and insurgents in Sabon Gari village, Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State, has left over 34 terrorists dead. The clash occurred on January 4, 2025, and highlights the ongoing efforts to curb terrorism in the region.

Attack by ISWAP and Boko Haram

According to a statement released by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, the attack involved fighters from the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram. Armed with motorcycles and gun trucks, the insurgents launched a surprise assault on military troops stationed in the area.

The assault is believed to have been a retaliation for recent operations by Nigerian forces that led to the elimination of several terrorist commanders and their combatants.

Swift Military Response and Air Support

The attack was swiftly countered by Nigerian troops, who were supported by reinforcements comprising the Civilian Joint Task Force, vigilantes, and hybrid forces. The reinforcement team, though hindered by an improvised explosive device (IED), managed to join the operation and decisively overpower the insurgents.

The air component of Operation HADIN KAI played a pivotal role by conducting targeted strikes on fleeing insurgents, ensuring their defeat and dispersal.

Casualties and Recovered Weapons

The operation resulted in the deaths of over 34 insurgents, with troops recovering 23 AK-47 rifles, over 200 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and other military-grade weaponry.

Unfortunately, six military personnel were killed during the encounter. Their names are being withheld until their families have been notified.

Nigerian Military’s Commitment to Ending Terrorism

Major General Buba reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ dedication to combating insurgency and terrorism in Nigeria. “The Nigerian military remains resolute in its efforts to ensure peace and security in the region,” he said.

The Defence Headquarters called on media outlets to respect the privacy of the deceased soldiers’ families during this difficult period.

Conclusion

This latest operation underscores the challenges and sacrifices involved in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. The military’s ability to neutralize such a significant number of insurgents demonstrates its resolve to protect the nation’s sovereignty and citizens.
