Among those apprehended is a terrorist commander, Usman Maisaje, who is known to be a close associate of the wanted high-profile terrorist leader Kachalla Boka. Key Developments in Counter-Terrorism Efforts In a statement released on Friday, Major General Buba Edward, Director of Defence Media Operations, detailed the recent achievements of the military. He highlighted that the arrest of Maisaje has proven valuable for intelligence gathering, as he is actively cooperating with the troops to provide crucial information for ongoing operations. Buba stated, “During the week, troops neutralised 96 terrorists, arrested 227 individuals, and rescued 157 kidnapped hostages.” The successful capture of the terrorist commander is expected to enhance the operational capabilities of the military in combating terrorism. Operations Against Oil Theft In addition to counter-terrorism efforts, troops also made significant strides in tackling oil theft in the South-South region of Nigeria. The military reported recovering crude oil valued at approximately N712 million and arresting 45 individuals involved in oil theft activities. Buba noted, “Troops denied the theft of an estimated sum of N712,065,450.00 and arrested 45 perpetrators of oil theft.” The operations led to the discovery and destruction of various illegal refining sites and equipment, including four dugout pits, 48 boats, 52 drums, and 38 storage tanks. Recovery of Weapons and Ammunition The military’s efforts also resulted in the recovery of an extensive cache of weapons and ammunition, further bolstering national security. Troops recovered a total of 71 assorted weapons and 1,463 rounds of ammunition, including: – 50 AK-47 rifles – 16 fabricated rifles – 5 Dane guns – 5 pump-action guns – 5 locally made pistols – 1 revolver pistol – 16 AK-47 magazines Additionally, the troops seized various military and logistical equipment, including 19 vehicles, 23 motorcycles, and 35 mobile phones, along with a sum of N4,087,630.00 and 46,000 CFA. Conclusion The recent operations conducted by Nigerian troops underscore the military’s commitment to combating terrorism and organized crime within the country.
