The Department of Justice, I hope this letter finds you well.
I am writing to express my concern regarding the sentencing of Changpeng Zhao, which is scheduled for today.
It is disheartening to hear that there is a call for Changpeng Zhao to be sentenced to three years in jail.
Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty in November 2023 to certain accusations against Binance, particularly concerning the non-strict implementation of AML regulations.
It’s worth noting that Binance was launched in 2017, at a time when there were no regulatory frameworks or guidelines for cryptocurrency exchanges, and this remains the case today.
While we acknowledge the importance of governments fulfilling their responsibilities, we believe there needs to be more meaningful engagement between governments and crypto stakeholders. Changpeng Zhao should not be sent to prison; his place is not in jail.
Prisons are meant for individuals who pose a danger to society, which is not the case with Changpeng Zhao.Changpeng Zhao’s life story is an inspiration to many around the world.
As an immigrant who rose from humble beginnings, he has achieved remarkable success through hard work and determination.
He is a self-made billionaire who has earned his wealth through legitimate means, not through illicit activities.Changpeng Zhao has also contributed positively to society by assisting governments in recovering stolen funds and training financial security agencies in cybersecurity.
He is highly respected in the crypto space and is praised by both friends and foes for his contributions.Sending Changpeng Zhao to jail would send the wrong message to the world.
The United States is often seen as a country that celebrates heroes and punishes villains. Changpeng Zhao’s judgment today will determine whether he is seen as a hero or a villain.
In conclusion, I urge the Department of Justice to reconsider the sentencing of Changpeng Zhao and instead consider alternatives such as probation.
Changpeng Zhao still has much to offer to the crypto world and to society as a whole.
Sincerely, Jeremeeh Kousse Founder & CEO, Manoka and Kryptowaves.
