Security Checkpoints as Cash Points: Unmasking Corruption in Nigeria’s Southeast

By DAYO ADESULU

The Disturbing Trend of Extortion at Security Checkpoints

The southeast geo-political zone of Nigeria, encompassing Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States, has gained notoriety for an alarming form of corruption. Security checkpoints, which are intended to ensure public safety, have been repurposed into cash points for illicit extortion. Policemen and, in certain cases, soldiers operating these checkpoints are exploiting their positions, targeting unsuspecting commuters, car drivers, and tricycle operators.

Modus Operandi: Harassment and Extortion

The method of operation is alarmingly straightforward. Security personnel flag down vehicles, subjecting their occupants to unnecessary searches and harassment. Rather than focusing on the security of lives and property, the primary goal is to extort money from drivers and passengers. Young men behind the wheel of luxury cars are particularly vulnerable, often profiled and unjustly targeted for financial exploitation.

The POS Machine: A Tool for Corruption

In a shocking twist, some security officials are now equipped with Point of Sale (POS) machines, using them to withdraw various sums from victims’ accounts under the pretext of investigating suspicious financial activities or potential links to cybercrime. However, the truth reveals a disturbing reality: these officials are more concerned with enriching themselves than upholding the law.

Societal Implications: Erosion of Trust and Justice

This alarming trend of transforming security checkpoints into cash points is not just a display of corruption; it reflects deeper societal issues. The stereotype that young men driving high-end vehicles are involved in fraudulent activities perpetuates a cycle of harassment and injustice, further damaging the public’s trust in security forces. Such practices foster a culture of arrogance and impunity, allowing security personnel to engage in corrupt acts without fear of repercussions.

A Call for Reform: Restoring Integrity in the Security Sector

To combat this pervasive issue, a comprehensive overhaul of the security sector is essential. This includes implementing training programs that prioritize ethical conduct, professionalism, and integrity. Additionally, establishing robust mechanisms for reporting and addressing corruption can ensure that those guilty of extortion are held accountable.

Conclusion: A Collective Effort for Change

The transformation of security checkpoints into cash points is merely a symptom of a broader societal malaise. Addressing the root causes of corruption requires a united effort from all stakeholders. Only by restoring trust in the security apparatus can we aspire to create a safer, more just society for all Nigerians.
