Senator Abdulfatai Buhari Advocates for Four-Aircraft Policy to Enhance Nigeria’s Aviation Sector

By MUHAMMAD DANBABA

  •  Call for Improved Regulation Amidst Domestic Airlines’ Flight Disruptions

Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, has proposed a new four-aircraft policy aimed at addressing the persistent underperformance of domestic airlines in Nigeria. His remarks came during the South-West Regional Air Transportation Summit (SWATS) 2024, which focused on the theme: ‘Repositioning the Nigerian Aviation Industry for Financial Capability and Economic Viability,’ held in Lagos.

  • Concerns Over Flight Disruptions

During the summit, Senator Buhari expressed his concerns regarding the frequent disruptions in flight schedules by domestic carriers. He emphasized that the current state of airline operations is alarming and requires immediate attention from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The senator’s proposal aims to enhance operational efficiency and reliability within the aviation sector.

  • Specific Routes for Smaller Airlines

Buhari urged the NCAA to implement a policy that designates specific routes for airlines operating with fewer than four aircraft. He stressed that airlines with limited fleets should focus on fewer destinations to ensure professionalism and operational effectiveness. Citing historical examples, he noted that airlines like Overland Airlines thrived by concentrating on specific routes with small aircraft, demonstrating that a targeted approach can lead to success.

  • The Role of Regulatory Oversight

The senator highlighted the crucial role of the NCAA in regulating airline operations to improve service delivery and customer satisfaction. He pointed out that while global aviation ratings may be improving, what Nigerians truly desire is consistent performance in domestic flights. Effective regulation, according to Buhari, is essential for fostering a reliable aviation environment that meets the needs of travelers.

  • Encouraging Legal Action Against Airlines

In a bid to empower consumers, Senator Buhari encouraged Nigerians to adopt a more assertive stance regarding flight disruptions. He noted that many passengers endure poor service without holding airlines accountable, suggesting that legal action should be an avenue for seeking redress. “Nigerians have what is called thick skin,” he remarked, urging citizens to challenge airlines when necessary, even if they fear unfavorable outcomes in court.

Senator Buhari’s four-aircraft policy proposal aims to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation industry by promoting accountability and operational focus among domestic airlines. As the NCAA considers these recommendations, the future of Nigeria’s aviation sector will depend on enhanced regulation and a commitment to improving the travel experience for all Nigerians.
