The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma in Edo State on Wednesday refuted claims that it was graduating students from abroad while also criticizing the Governor Godwin Obaseki administration for operating the university outside of accepted norms.
Speaking at a press conference in Benin City, the chairman of the union, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele, claimed that the university administration had been making unfounded accusations against its members with the help of the Special Intervention Team (SIT) that the state governor had established. These accusations included tax evasion and academic transcript and certificate racketeering, among other things, while failing to fulfill the majority of its obligations, such as making deductions for the state health insurance without adhering to the Act
He claimed that the SIT had accused them of graduating around 30 students from abroad. “Does graduation of students in a university start and end with “marking of scripts? “, he asked. “ASUU considers this allegation of academic fraud as an illusion and demands publication of the names, courses, departments, years of graduation of the students in question as well as details of the lecturers involved in the alleged academic fraud.”
Regarding claims made by the SIT that it discovered a number of instances of employee tax cheating totaling more than N2b “If the claim is true, one would have thought that the names of staff defaulting on tax payments would have been published, and the offenders would have been prosecuted and punished.”

He said that the administration and SIT were forcing university employees to pay a charge before they could enter the school’s grounds to visit their offices.
He suggested Governor Obaseki’s implementation of the choices made at a stakeholder meeting on the university’s future held on March 16 of this year as a way out.
The head of the university’s corporation communications, Otunba Mike Aladenika, has not reacted to questions as of the time this article was filed, therefore the administration has not addressed the concerns highlighted.
