By DAYO ADESULU

As usual, the Federal Government on Thursday addressed recent comments by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, concerning economic reforms introduced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Government’s Reaction

In a statement by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government:

  1. Acknowledged Sanusi’s Rights
    • Recognized the Emir’s right to express his views, including criticism or commendation of government policies.
  2. Criticized Withholding of Support
    • Questioned the Emir’s decision to refrain from offering public advice due to perceived personal grievances.
    • Urged the Emir to prioritize national interest over personal considerations.
  3. Defended Economic Reforms
    • Stressed the necessity of bold actions to address entrenched economic challenges, including unifying exchange rates and removing the fuel subsidy.
    • Highlighted achievements such as increased investor confidence, enhanced foreign reserves, and resource allocation to critical sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
  4. Called for Unity Among Leaders
    • Emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating that divisive rhetoric undermines public trust and progress.

Government’s Achievements and Outlook

  • The statement referenced World Bank projections that affirmed the potential long-term benefits of the reforms on Nigeria’s economic recovery.
  • Acknowledged the “temporary pains” as necessary steps to address decades of poor economic management.

Urging Constructive Contribution

The Federal Government expressed disappointment over Sanusi’s perceived shift in loyalty and urged him to contribute constructively to national development.

“Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. Leaders owe it a duty to champion the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria,” the statement said.

Conclusion

The government reiterated its commitment to fostering an inclusive and sustainable economy, emphasizing the need for unity and collaboration. It called on Nigerians to prioritize collective prosperity over personal or partisan interests to build a stronger and more prosperous nation.
