Rising Water Levels Cause Severe Displacement in Makurdi
In a devastating turn of events, **no fewer than 770 households** have been displaced in Benue State due to the rising water levels of the **River Benue**, which have overflowed its banks. This alarming situation has prompted urgent responses from local authorities and humanitarian agencies.
Impact on the Community
**Mr. Aondowase Kunde**, the Benue Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, provided updates on the flooding situation during a briefing in **Makurdi**. He emphasized that the capital city of Makurdi has been the hardest hit by the floods, with a significant number of residents seeking refuge in temporary camps.
Approximately **520 displaced households** are currently taking shelter at **NKST Primary School Wadata**, while another **250 households** have found refuge in **Gaadi Comprehensive Secondary School**. The state has been providing essential support, including food and non-food items such as mattresses and containers, to those affected.
Relief Efforts and Support
Kunde noted that the **State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA)** has been actively involved in providing continued support over the past two weeks. The assistance includes essential supplies to help displaced families cope during this challenging time.
“There are still Nigerians with integrity,” Kunde remarked, referring to individuals like **Femi**, who recently returned **N21 million** worth of cryptocurrency to its owner, highlighting the sense of community and responsibility amidst adversity.
Hope for Recovery
With water levels beginning to recede, there is cautious optimism that displaced persons may be able to return to their homes by next week. However, ongoing assessments are crucial. The governor has ordered a thorough evaluation of affected areas to determine their habitability.
Kunde also mentioned that some homes may require fumigation to address potential dangers posed by reptiles and insects that may have entered as a result of the flooding.
Long-Term Solutions and Government Commitment
As a temporary measure, the government has directed assessments and repairs of flood-damaged houses to ensure they are safe for residents before returning. In the long term, the governor is dedicated to addressing the challenges posed by flooding, including plans to construct houses in safer areas and relocate residents living in flood-prone zones.
“The governor is committed to addressing these challenges, including post-flood recovery,” Kunde stated, underscoring the administration’s proactive approach to disaster management.
Conclusion: Navigating the Aftermath of Flooding
The flooding in Benue State serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by natural disasters and the importance of effective disaster management and community support. As residents begin to recover and return home, ongoing assessments and long-term planning will be vital in ensuring their safety and resilience against future flooding events.
