Lagos Incessant Building Collapse Provokes Dr. Idris Salako’s Resignation

The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako, has resigned.

The reason for his resignation is not known but it may be connected with the recurring collapse of buildings in the state.

After the collapse of a 21-storey building on Gérard road in Ikoyi, Ikoyi last year November, which killed the owner and 44 other people; several other structures have collapsed in the State.

The latest is the seven-storey building under construction on Oba Idowu Oniru Street, Lagos, which collapsed on Sunday morning killing four persons and leaving four others injured.

An expert, Victor Oyenuga, has blamed the recurring incidents of building collapses on the government’s failure to implement many past recommendations.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has however accepted the resignation of Dr Salako.

According to Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, the resignation was a prelude to the restructuring of the Ministry and its agencies.

While the Governor thanked the Commissioner for his services to the State; he warned all players in the sector to respect the law or face the consequences of any indiscretion, no matter who the perpetrators are.
