Buhari Fires HYPREP’s Project Director

Dr. Ferdinand Giadom’s position as Project Director of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has been terminated with the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Giadom was fired on Tuesday evening, and Professor Nanibarini Zabbey was named as Giadom’s replacement, according to a message seen on the Nigerian Presidency’s official Twitter account, @NGRPresident.

According to a tweet from President @MBuhari, Dr. Ferdinand Giadom’s position as the project coordinator for @HYPREPNigeria has been terminated, and Prof. Nanibarini Zabbey has been named the new project coordinator, effective immediately.

The same development was also revealed in a statement from the Federal Ministry of Environment, which was signed by Olusegun Shogbola, the minister’s media assistant.

“His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR has approved the termination of Dr. Ferdinand Giadom’s appointment as the Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), effective immediately, and in his place, PROF. NANIBARINI ZABBEY will serve as the new Project Coordinator of HYPREP.”

Prof. Nanibarini Zabbey is a leading and well-known Ogoni hydrobiology expert with a background in remediation-related activities and a preference for bio-monitoring and restoration ecology. He also has a wealth of expertise and knowledge in these fields.

Prof. Nanibarini Zabbey was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Fisheries Faculty of Agriculture, University of Porthacourt, prior to his appointment.

Prof. Nanibarini Zabbey is the first African to receive the Association of the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) 2022 Ruth Patrick Award for research and involvement that had a significant influence on the restoration of the Niger Delta ecosystem following oil disasters and environmental justice for impacted communities, according to the statement.
