Suitable Road Marking, Street Naming, And House Numbering For FCT

FCT ROAD

In order to address the deficit and opportunities brought about by the ensuing increase in population, infrastructure and facilities have primarily been developed to accommodate new residents or make allowances for wholly new activities.

With the development of motor vehicles came the necessity for road signs, and as civilization advanced so did the complexity of the information, instructions, and rules that needed to be communicated. In the contemporary modern jungle we live in, the significance of street maps, road markers, house tags, signposts, gantries, traffic/road signs, etc. cannot be overestimated. Services like courier, logistics, urban taxi, emergency, and rescue greatly benefit from adequately designated roads and numbered dwellings in effective service delivery, in addition to the scenario previously drawn of reduced running times of passenger cars and the hassles of navigation.

Additionally, because they frequently use medium-duty diesel trucks for their operations, they also produce greenhouse gas emissions that can be reduced by reducing the time it takes to provide their services.

Special consideration is given to coded information systems for wayfinding in the context of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, given its current deficit in wayfinding systems, and given the urgent need for immediate measures to improve navigation, reduce commute times, and reduce the carbon footprint of passenger vehicles.

Before writing was developed as a means of communicating information about time, distance, direction, and ownership customs, wayfinding signs have been around for a very long time.

Around their empire, the Romans created milestones that served as guiding indicators. The up to seven-foot-tall stone pillars provided information to onlookers about the distances to nearby cities.

Complex road designs and configurations make it difficult and frustrating to navigate, which has a negative impact on commuters’ psychology, causes them to be dissatisfied, and lessens the environment’s ability to be inclusive. Traffic jams significantly affect commuters and city dwellers by causing stress, anxiety, excessive noise, and air pollution from carbon emissions from moving vehicles, which have been shown to raise the risk of heart-related disorders.

Given the foregoing, it is unavoidable that significant resources be allocated to the ongoing planning, creation, and placement of directional signage in the FCT.

Making sure that these investments are made would enable developing nations to use the money that would otherwise be spent on pollution management or protection to address other pressing economic or social issues.

Therefore, it is advised that highlighted coded information wayfinding systems (road markings, street signs, house number tags, etc.) be designed and installed in accordance with globally acceptable standards and guidelines, taking into account proper placements at points of high visual integration and levels that are conveniently visible to road users, with materials produced from energy-efficient processes.

These recommendations, established by wayfinding researchers, include employing landmarks to provide orientation cues and memorable locations, generating identification of each area that is different from others, such as different lettering and background colours for districts, etc.

When creating naming, numbering, or measuring protocols, take into account information in several languages or including images. Use sequential, logical, rational, and consistent name protocol and measurement units, as well as graphics, colours, and logos.

Suitable for all user categories are the ensurement of physical placement, installation, and the illumination of signs in order to accommodate a wide range of individual preferences and abilities it is also important to use symbols that can be easily remembered by road users from different cultural backgrounds.
